When I first sat down with Jun and Vicky, their motivation for building was crystal clear: they longed for more space and the freedom to design a home that truly reflected their lifestyle.
"We didn't want to feel trapped anymore," Jun shared. "A yard, more room, and a home tailored to our preferences—that's what drew us to this project. The excitement of working with an architect was a huge bonus."
Beyond just gaining more space, the couple viewed building as a wise investment, not only for their lifestyle but also for the potential return on buying and selling land.
The Spark: An Auction, a Leap of Faith, and a Community
Their incredible journey began unexpectedly at a land auction. Without a concrete plan, Jun and Vicky purchased a parcel of land. They quickly found themselves immersed in the world of custom home building.
"We started exploring the area, met other builders, and got a lot of encouragement,"
"Three and a half years later, the land is graded and construction is underway."
Custom Home Build Journey
Their future home, meticulously designed in close collaboration with the Reynard team, will soon be completed on a gently sloping 1.44-acre lot on Transart Parkway.
The thoughtful floor plan features three bedrooms, three and a half baths, a welcoming indoor/outdoor entertaining area, and a finished basement complete with a home theater—perfect for gatherings with friends and family.
Dos and Don'ts: Practical Advice from Jun & Vicky
Jun and Vicky's firsthand experience offers practical advice for anyone considering a custom build:
Dos:
Research Thoroughly: "Understand the market and consult experts before buying land. It'll save you Time and money."
Give Yourself Time: "Build in margins and be patient. It made all the difference for us, even allowing us to profit from our first land investment."
Know Your Non-Negotiables: "Define your must-haves—location, proximity to services, lifestyle needs. It keeps you focused."
Don'ts:
Don't Rush into a Big Project: "Starting smaller might have been wiser, but we learned a lot by diving in."
Don't Be Your Own General Contractor Unless...: "It's a massive job. Unless you're analytical, persistent, and realistic, trust a professional."
Don't Overlook Your Support System: "Having reliable support—whether a partner, neighbors, or professionals—makes the process smoother."
Finding Joy in the Process
Despite the inherent challenges of any large-scale project, Jun and Vicky have found true enjoyment in their journey. For Jun, it's the profound satisfaction of watching raw land transform into a vibrant homesite. For Vicky, it's all about creativity—designing the house on paper and envisioning the finished product as it comes to life.
"The creative process keeps us motivated," Vicky said. "It's exciting to imagine what's to come."
