The Vision

For Marci, Kevin, and their family, the journey to realize their dream home in Talking Rock, GA was a highly rewarding  engagement in architectural design and collaboration. From the initial sketches provided by architect James Knight to the final construction documents, this project highlights what is possible when a dedicated family partners with an expert team.

Guided by James and brought to life alongside a hand-picked local general contractor the Robinson residence was a story of turning complex site challenges into a memorable home in the North Georgia mountains.

Reynard Architectural Designs

The architectural design process was carefully structured to ensure every detail of the family’s vision was captured, refined, and engineered for perfection.

Project Phases, Timeline Key Milestones & Deliverables

Phase One: Conception

Developed initial concepts, established the core “platforms for living” philosophy, and designed the signature cantilever deck.

Phase Two: Refinement

Created immersive 3D renderings, finalized material selections, and integrated builder feedback for budget alignment.

Phase Three: Execution

Completed comprehensive construction documents and resolved complex structural engineering requirements.

A hallmark of high-end custom home design is adaptability. Throughout the design and planning stages, the Reynard design team encountered several hurdles that ultimately improved the final home.

  • Navigating Zoning Restrictions: Originally envisioned as a detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), the guest suite was rejected by the HOA and the county as an unpermitted “second dwelling.” The creative solution was to connect the guest quarters to the main house via a beautifully enclosed, heated hallway, transforming a regulatory roadblock into a seamless, integrated living space.

  • The Late-Stage Loft Addition: Late in the design process, the family requested a 200-square-foot loft complete with a Juliet balcony. To avoid the massive expense and structural redesign of raising the roofline, the team ingeniously incorporated a ship ladder, preserving the home’s profile while delivering the requested space.

  • Dynamic Framing Adjustments: During the framing process, an exterior stone fireplace was introduced to the design. This striking feature was engineered on the fly to span multiple deck levels, creating a breathtaking focal point for outdoor entertaining.

  • Strategic Window Evolution: Capturing the sweeping views of Talking Rock required continuous refinement of the window package. The team meticulously balanced panoramic sight-lines with structural integrity and strict budget management.

A truly custom home must reflect the realities of the people who live in it. Marci, who humorously describes herself as “notoriously clumsy,” directly inspired one of the home’s most refined interior features: zero-threshold transitions. By eliminating tripping hazards and creating flush floor levels throughout the home, the design achieved both accessibility and a sleek, modern aesthetic.

The family remained highly engaged at every step, making strategic choices to maximize their budget without sacrificing the integrity of the design.

The success of the Robinson residence was built on a foundation of trust, flexibility, and a shared vision. Obstacles were never viewed as dead ends, but rather as invitations to innovate. The warmth and camaraderie among the design and construction team made the design journey just as rewarding as the final blueprint and ultimately the finished home.
